A safe space for self exploration
Art therapy
Although all art making can bring therapeutic benefits, art therapy is practiced in the presence of a qualified art therapist in a confidential and safe place.
We don’t need any ability in art to do this.
Making art in whatever way we can, may help us to express feelings we may have trouble finding the words to say, or perhaps not feel safe to say.
Tapping into our intuitive, imaginative and creative right brain helps us access memories, emotions and sensory experiences which are often blocked by the workings of our logical, analytical, verbal left brain.
The images we make, and even the ways we make them, often represent aspects of our subconscious mind.
As an art therapist, it is not my role to interpret or judge your art. Instead, I guide and safely support you to find your own meanings.
Is art therapy right for you?
Art therapy is suitable for adults, adolescents and children and can help a wide range of people experiencing issues with anxiety and depression, health challenges, traumatic experiences, addictions, relationship conflicts, loss and grief, difficult life transitions and ageing.
Art therapy may help you to become more self aware, find new perspectives on your personal experience, and work through conflicts and difficult feelings.
In art therapy we talk, too. The balance is up to you.. Sometimes the greatest healing occurs by simply having someone to listen.
My practice
Art of Wellbeing offers individual consultations combining art therapy within a counselling session or group art therapy for clients with specific needs in a range of settings.
My work includes NDIS participants who are self-managed or plan-managed. I offer therapeutic supports working within both Core and Capacity Building support categories to improve daily living.
I use a range of art media including painting, drawing, collage and clay but also have a particular interest in photo-art-therapy, therapeutic photography and mindfulness-based art therapy and photography.
My practice is client-centred and draws upon evidence-based principles of cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, positive psychology, mindfulness and neuropsychology. I have clinical experience working with clients experiencing mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, personality disorders, addictions, the effects of trauma, grief and loss, chronic pain, disabilities and dementia. I'm passionate about supporting people to build awareness, confidence and strength and find safe ways to express their feelings. All content is kept confidential.
With a Masters in Art Therapy (with Distinction), I'm a professionally registered art therapist (AThR, ANZACATA) with training in art psychotherapy and counselling.
